IDs (Id, costs Gs. A man named Thomas McDonald pleaded guilty to a charge of having used obscene language on the Oluira road, near Wluinganioninna, on Decenilier 17. Accused. who is ill the emplov of the Public Works Department, stated i that he was drunk at the time, it being the first occasion on which drink had I passed his lips for four year.. Sergeant I McXeely. who prosecuted, stated that McDonald was not very drunk at the time. Several children were in the' vicinity when Constable Scannell ar- j rested' him. The only thing that the | police knew about accused, who had a wife anil four children, was that he was addicted to drink. Mr. Sole said that the Bench took a- serious view of the offence generally, iind felt disposed to inflict imprisonment without.the option in all cases. As it was McDonald's first appearance, he would he. dealt with jcnicritly and lined £5, in default one, month's imprisonment. McDonald, who asked for three month's time in which to pay tlic fine, was granted one month. He was also,'at his own request, prohibited. At the. Ma.uistrate's Court yesterday morning a statutory first, offender for drunkenness, who is well known in the court, was convicted and discharged, and advised to return to Whangamomona to his work.
