Tho colliery was properly ventilated anil properly inspected oil the morning of the explosion, but the muitber of examiners wis inadequate. The explosion was due to gas fed by coal dust. The cleansing' of the. Hours en roads was systematic, but it was recommended that more attention be paid to the roofs and sides, and the commis-, sion urged the Home, Ollice to endeavor to lind a solution of the (lust problem. They were unable to locate the origin, but the preponderance of evidence enabled the commission to fix the lamp station ,as the probable starting point. It was unable to say whether the ignition "was caused by a spark from the electric wire, but the evidence pointed to a naked lamp at the lamp station. There was no neglect on the part of anybody contributing to 420 deaths. The lamp station ought to be plated in tlic bar shaft. The water tanks should he iiitcd with sprayers and the use of shovel-butt buckets should lie discontinued- The number of inspectors of mines was insufficient.
