TVHAXAKf TOCUXA.M I'.XT AT 11AWFKA. IXTERIIUPTKI) 13V ItAIN'. (Morions weather prevailed ilium;,' t.ic greater ]kiit of yesterday tor the lawn tennis tournament al llawcra, but about four o'clock rain set- in from the north, ami play ceased before. half-past four o'clock.. The managerial arrangements wore overwhelmed ;\l one part of the <lay, ami dillicultjy was experienced in keeping the courts busy, often because of the difficulty in obtaining umpires, for whom the. management depended almost exclusively' npon the competitors, yesterday' afternoon being an exception. Some of the players commented on this, and said it was hardly fair to a man to take him off the court and place him on the umpire's stand, and to call him irnm there for a still' single or a hot double match. Fvou had the weather held, it was almost impossible for the whole of the matches to '.have hceii completed to-day, and, now the weather has broken. Fortunately the. weather indications are still good. The. arrangements for reporting the results were, again faulty, secretaries, reporters and others interested all having to work oil' the one set of cards, the inconvenience, of which can be appreciated by some who know.
The lawns played capitally, and all players are enthusiastic almut their practically ' perfect condition. It is most unfortunate for the llawera l.'lub that it must vacate the. greater part of its property in about four years' time, for in recent years the lawns have been very greatly improved. The attendance of the public yesterday was again very gratifying, and the lawns present-ell a pretty and animated scene, the colors worn 'by the lady spectators and the white of the competitors, being thrown into relict by the foreground of green lawns. Weather permitting, play commences this [morning 'at nine o'clock. Players are asked to bit ready for their engagements. To-night the competitors and visitors are ,to he entertained at a dance in the Oddfellows' Hall. About the middle of the morning Ollivier and Webster met Jennings and S. Powdreil in the second round of the men's championship doubles. Powdreil and Jennings took the first game, and rail the next one close, bijt (lllivier secured it, and the next three. The seventh went to Jennings oil' hi* own service, but he won only two strokes in the next, and Ollivior took the set'(i—2. ill the second set Ollivier won the first game by clever placing. The fourth, Powdreil ran to deuce, and won, I! 1. Webster was ''foot-faulted" in the sixth. Powdreil served in the deciding game. Webster essayed the winning shot, a hot return from the right corner, but went out. t'owdrell's double fault gave. Ollivier the game, set, and match 0-2, o—2.
Miss V- 'Simpson met Miss 1.. Hughes | in the second round of the champion | singles, ami, playing consistent tennis. | won, o—4,0 —4, o—4 , outgeneralling her i opponent, anil winning on placing. Miss ] Simpson is now due to meet -Miss lirew- | ster, and on her present form should , make things very interesting. A. Powdreil and Pearce defeated Wyborne. brothel's after a strenuously j contested matc'li. Powdreil was uncertain at the start, but warmed up. The W'ybornes. on the other band, tailed to maintain the tremendous dash with which they set out. Their services in tilie tirst -set were terrific, oft rimes beating both umpire, and opponents, who could only watch them whiz/, by. Both Wybornes played a great defensive game, returning' what seemed impossible shots with wondrous accuracy. Tlie.y had the greater variety of strokes, I*. ,T. Wyborne's half volleys proving of great service, but Pearse. ami Powdreil topped form in the last and wore them down. o—7, S—li, 0--2. Tliey will probably li ml their way into the lina! with Ollivier and Webster.
Just after the luncheon speli, Webster anil Miss llrewster met S. Powdreil and .Miss 11. Hughes, and a. very interesting handicap maicb iv-ulted. 1 Jot li ladies played excellent tennis, driving an excellent length w it li .accuracy. Miss llrewster led on tactic:,, often making a. winning shot by v. it ting sharply across to Powdreil at the finish of :> long duel with Mi.-s Hughe,-. There was also more sting ill her serve:,. Webster's service and overhead work stood him in good stead, and Usually In ought him the advantage. Pearse and Marshall commenced th":r
