Volcanic Eruption

A tidal wave added to the 'horror.? resulting from the eruption at, Ka"oshima, where a multitude crowded the beach# DETAILS OP THE EJIUPTIO-Y. MAGNIFICENT SPECTACLE. TERRIBLE DESTIII CTIOX. Received 15. 12.5 a.m. Tokio, .January 14. The eruption ol' Sakurashima commenced with enormous columns of smoke bursting forth at several points. Forty Minutes later the eruption took place the summit. The liouncs on the east si.le of Sakulashima were the first to take fire. The surviving inhabitants thronged the beach, aud the. police commandeered J filters to taki the refugees. Tile heat was intense, ajy'l the sky was darkened by smoke. As seen from the mainland, the island was a magnificent spectacle. It appeared enveloped iu flames, the brilliance of which was constantly enhanced by esuptions from the crater. Meanwhile, 70,000 Kugoshinia people belteved their homes were about to share the fate of the island. Hundreds ol houses were destroyed, the inhabitants being killed or injured. Kagoshim.i was shaken bv an earthquake every three or live minutes, 200 lieing registered 011 .Sunday. Asa ma is also active, and Kirishima, •ill miles north of Kagoshima, is also causing devastation.
There are seismic disturbances throughout the Kytishija province. Ngasaki, 100 miles away, is covered with volcanic ash.
