ADVANCING NEW PLYMOUTH.
EXPANSION' ANT) TOURIST LEAGUE. A committee meeting of the Xew Plymouth Expansion and Tourist League took place last evening, there being present:—Messrs T. C. List (chairman), W. A. Collis, K. Webster, S. Teed, McDiarmiil, aiiil S. W. Shaw. The advertising and printing sub-com-mittee reported that advertisements had been placed in the miiieipal newspapers of the Dominion before the holiday*, and that the illustrated booklets li'tul been completed and forwarded to enquirers. Arrangements had also been made for the distribution of tile booklets in New Zealand, and also at the tourist bureaux of Australia and on the ships coming to New Zealand. The booklets, it was stated, had cost a good ileal of money, but they were of a nature that would serve for more than one season.. It. was also reported that the framed sots of views bad been forwarded toAuckland and placed ia the leading hotels and 'boarding-houses, as well as in the shipping offices and tourist bureaux. Sets had also been placed in Rotorua's leading hotel and in the hotels of Wellington. Members were very complimentary in their remarks concern to«r the booklet, which, they contended, was a credit to everyone concerned in Its production and also to the town and district, which it could not fail to beneit. Everyone who had seen it, they added, was of the same opinion. A resolution appreciative of. the work of those responsible for its issue was passed.
Accounts were pnssed for. payment, after which numbers conferred with .Mr ft. Hatch, Australasian manager of Cook's, who was Riven an insight into the work the League had lieen eii>»;ig.<d upon during the past 18 months. " Mr, Hatch was much interested, and said his people would he very clad to do whatever they could for a district posseting such a wealth cfintcrcst and attraction as this. But Xow Plymouth raftered somewhat bv,the fact that to some extent it was out of the "line of march'' of the tourists, wlio. after "doing" Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo and Waitomo, generally proceeded to Wanganui via the river or direct to Wellington. Whit was wanted was the improvement of the mute between Te Kntti and New Plymouth via Mokau. When that was effected, or when the Stratford trunkrailway was completed, tliev could expect a regular stream of tourists to these parts. Mr Hatch was informed of the movenient to induce the Government to improve the road between Waitojr.o and the Molcau River, and to snap the upper reaches of the latter, so enabling tourists to do Waitomo, motor or coach to tho Mokau, coming down the river by launch to the township, and then come on to New Plymouth and the mountain. Mr Hatch said if this were done a great boon would bo conferred on tourists. who were ever desirous of travelling over new routes. From what lie had heard, he believed this would mnL-e a particularly interesting trip, and one that would be largely availed of. He urged them not to slacken in their efforts to have the necessary improvements effected and the trip made possible at as early a date as possible. After chatting further, and incidentally giving members some valuable tips, Mr Hatch, who was accompanied by Mr E. W. Garner, local agent, for Cook's retired. To-day he is being taken to the Mountain House and shown over tinPark and other points of local intereft.
