HFALTII INSI'KCTOII'Si KKPOIIT. The Health Inspector (Mr A. 11. Kendall) reported as follows: During tli« past month a careful inspection of premises in that portion of the town of New Plymouth which lies hetween Dawson and Queen Streets has failed to detect any insanitary conditions, the condition generally being satisfactory. Complaints are made, about a nuisance which i* being caused by the continuance of a rubbish depot near Morlcy. and Cainc Streets, mid the material tin re deposited will make a very unhealthy and unsuitable building section for future residential and other purposes of a similar nature. CLAIM VOU COMPENSATION". Mr Duncan MeAllnni wrote with regard to a trap accident which happened to him on November '2S, as the result of the neglected state of a -art of the Main South Road, w'hich had been under tho control of (he Council since .September 1, 1012. The accident occurred opposite Mr W. Bailey's house, between the entrance to the Phoenix bore and the top of the Mission Hill. He wtated that tho road in that particular place was dangerous to vehicular traffic, and that, in crossing this place, the shafts of his gig were jerked up and.down so violently that one of them broke, and lie was thrown out on tp the metal. In addition to the injuries he roceive.l, his gig was smaslied, his harness was broken, and his horse was badly hurt. Ho did not know if the Council were legally responsible for his suffering (although he intended to find out), but there was no doubt it was morally bo. Culpable neglect of its duties by a punlie body was not, however, the point in discussion. Fifty nounds would not cover his expenses, but he was willing to talk the matter over with the Council, with a view to an amicable settlement.
It was decided to inform Mr MoAlluiu that the Council could not admit any liability.
DORALTO ROAD. The Borough Engineer reported that it would be some time before the street work authorised could bs started, owing to easements being required, and as there were several good men awaiting employment, he suggested that Doralto Road be done by day labor. This work could be started at once.—Orantcd. The resolution to call tenders for this work was rescinded. BELT ROAD. The Borough Engineer (Mr C. Skitrop) reported on the question of forming a footpath in Belt Road, between Ttikapa Road and Wallace Place: that the cost of formation would be £:! lO.i. The work was now being carried out, and the road was b?ing put in good order for the .summer. LIARDET STREET BRIDfiE. The Electrical Engineer (Mr l<\ Black) wrote in connection with the section in Liardet Street, purchased Eome time a<n> for the use of the Electric Light Department. Tin* would, he pointed out, soon be required for the new sub-station, which would probably occupy most of the level ground. That part adjoiuin" the bridge over the old railway line, which was now being filled in, was about 2.lft below the road level. The site was a valuable one. and there was little doubt that, in future, it would be required for building purposes. He su»gesled that a wall be erected along the Liardet Street frontage before the road filling was put in. This wall should b» sufficiently strong (o act .s a retaining wall for the filling, and be suitable To carry any building which might Lp erected in the future. The cost would not be great, as there would be. considerable saving in filling. The Borough Engineer renortei that the depth of the excavation required to reach a solid foundation was nil in the deepest part. The wall should be 3/ft limb. The total could would be £.)32. The amount saved in filling would he £72. and the cost of the wall f.„ the Electric Light Department would be £4(>o.
Tt was decided lo proceed with Hie work in I.iardet Street as at present! the matter of a retaining wall to he held over. mrs. jiK.vnow's claim. Mr. J. Johnston wrote, on behalf of Mrs. Benbow, stating tTiat if the Council would pay her £.)<) and do Hie necessary filling to the satisfaction of the owner at Sd per yard, that would be satisfactory to all panics. He uwd the Council to do its part of the work as soon as possible. """ These terms were agreed to. TIMBER URAFFIC.
Mr T. V. Simons waited on the Council in connection with the fee of £■>() per annum charged him for carting timber over the borough streets to the railway station. lie consider,.;! this charge unfair, when rt was considered that others who carted hundreds of thousands of feet of timber from the station to contract jobs all over tic town were not charged anything. This put him in an invidious position. ' Cr. Collis considered that there was something in the complaint. It was -, common thing for timber to be cart-d from the station, not to timber yards out to contractors" works, free ' The Town Clerk explained that in these eases the Inspector had reported that no damage was done to tlie roads After further discussion it wis decided to forego the payment of heavy ■ra lie fees by Mr Simons until the new hy-laws come into force, provided that Mr Nmons pays the amount now due by him. and does not ikc vehicles with wider tyres than he is using ilt p „.
