Reese won the toss from Armstrong, ITemns and Patrick opened to the bowling of McDonald, which was fast, and Lampav's, which was of the googly order. Patrick was missed twice in the slips, but McDonald clean bowled him in the next over. Sneddon was bowled off his pad. Hickmott and Reese were the only pair to oiler opposition to the fast bowling. Reese was scratchy at the start, but once settled he showed clean, crisp cricket, with a strong oll'-drive ni"l cut. Hickmott displayed confidence and dash, but early in the innings he hid the benefit of tho luck. Sandman batted under, difficulties, lie strained his groin at Albury, the strain being painful though not serious. Tho New Zealanders were puzzled by the fast wicket, which played back too much. Their display was disappointing. The innings lasted 17minutes.
The Victorians fielded badly, many catches being dropped- Robinson and Carlton opened the attack on Carrol! and .Stewart. Carroll was nicely taken in l the slips. Stewart and Kiernan batted steadily until Stewart skied Sandman. The century occupied 75 minutes. Kiernan, who played an attractive innings, tried to liook Carlton, but mi.sliit and was caught by Tuckwell in the slip. In eight minutes he hit six fourers. The New Zealanders' total was passed after 100 minute:,' play. .Heather gave a lively .exhibition. He was in for 45 minutes, lie gave a difficult chance when 4 and also i when 14, oil Iliekmott.
