DISTRICT NEWS.

OPUXAKE. Air. llughson (chairman) and Mr. Moore (member), of the Jiarbnv I'oard, addressed a meeting' at Opunake on the Onunake harbor improvement proposals. The speakers said it was a preliminary . canter to test the feelings of the ratepayers o:i the raising of a £48,1100 loan. They did not want to incur any expense in going ill for a loan unless tliey were assured they had the support of the ratepayers. The speakers quoted ligurcH to show that if facilities were provided for shipping through the port of Opunake, a saving to the district of £2032 on exports would be made by the dairy factories, while the estimated saving on imports was £2373. To provide for the deficiency until .such time j as the work progressed it would lie necessary to provide £1433 by a rate | of 5-1 tj of a penny in the emmty, ami ! 3-Kitli of a penny in the pound in j the town. The full rate to secure the loan would' be 2-Ifitli in the town and 11-lOth in the couiitrw

On the motion oi Mr. HogeiN and Mr. Dudley, a motion was carried approving of the Harbor I'oard going in for a loan.

A resolution of approval was als-i carried at Oaonui, on the motion of Messrs. Kirk wood and J. Lusk.

At tlie Town Hoard meeting, a petition signed by the majority of shopkeepers was presented re(|u'esling Saturday as the statutory half-holiday. Two members (Messrs. Dudley and Trotter) were against Saturday, and Messrs Todd and Ross supported the petition. It was decided by the Hoard to await Mr. Million's return, and the filial be made on .Monday. There is likily to be a keen contest over it. If two men are seen waving their bands in the air and looking like the man from Borneo, you can bet they are discussing the Saturday versus Wednesday halt-holiday que-lion.

A l'iluma resident was charged •v'll: evading bis vows of affection. A formal adjournment was agreed on, bail being allowed.
