Weddel's report on the fro/.en meat trade states that the general average of quotations for 19KI was the highest on record. Australian supplies of beet and mutton were also records. It is unlikely that 191-1 will witness any further large expansion of the general trade, but the demands for all kinds of meats will probably be but little contracted, even if retail prices are permanently raised.
There are many reasons for assuming high values will he. maintained, but labor troubles might be a disturbing element. Should the new market, in the United develop on expanding lines, which many anticipate, the result will be to emphasise the inherent strength of the sellers, who arc already in a strong position. The Colonial Consignment Company reports that with the disappearance of the United States from the list of self-sup-porting countries and several European countries initiating the importation of meat, competition for supplies is likely to place, values permanently on a plane higher than has yet been reached.
