TEACHERS' CONGRESS.
♦ GATHERING IN AUCKLAND I ißy Telegraph.—i'ress Association. Auckland, Yesterday. At the annual meeting of the New I Zealand .Educational Institute a remit from the Wellington Institute, that the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute Should in future be held in Wellington during the session of Parliament, was supported 'by Mr. A. X. Burns, 1 who maintained that by holding their s meeting in the capital they would he able to extend their influence and knowledge of their aims. After discussion the remit was adopted. The Auckland and Hawke's Bay Insti- , tutes each forwarded remits approving 3 of the recommendation of. the Education Commission tiiat consolidation of schools should he carried out wherever possible. Mr. G. Lippiatt (Auckland) said that the scheme was now past the expori--0 mental stage, having been tried with t success in the United States and in New a South Wales. Calculations had shown ; . that a school of under 100 pupils could not support itself out of the Government grant, hut a big saving on the present expense could be made by amalgamating, ' say, three schools of 50 pupils each. In j. salaries alone there would he a saving r of £275, and the teaching would not be inefficient. The motion was carried.
A lively discussion took place upon an Auckland remit, which was to tho effect that tho time had arrived when all .lunior National and Education Board Scholarships should be abolished, and that the money so saved should be spent in paying the lodging expenses of those children who were highest on the list in the Junior Free Place examination and who required to live away from home in order to attend secondary schools. It was argued that the adoption of this suggestion would placo country pupils at an advantage over town children. The motion was eventually carried.
