Mr .0. Kendall asked leave to transfer his King road contract to Mr. A. W, Cowling.—Agreed to. A DISPUTED REFUND. The town clerk of New Plymouth applied for a refund of the sum of £(i paid to the Council hy Air, Tribe for the formation of Norman street, Yogeltown. The street having since been merged into the liorough of New Plymouth, and the. work in question not having been done, the cost of the formation would fall on the Borough Council, and this being >o. the. Council considered that the money paid over by Air. Tribe should be contributed towards the cost of tlio work. Mr. Tribe wrote in reference to his application (which was before the Council at its last meeting) for a refund of the sum in quest ion. He pointed out that the Council in its reply ro Ms previous application had said that as the matter was taken into consideration in the adjustment with tire borough of Xew Plymouth the Council could not grant his' request. If this were so. he would ask the Council to grant, liini permission to examine the adjustment- accounts. Mr. Benoni White wrote with reference to the petition of September, 11112, for linking up the two detached metalled portions of the Mangorei road (kept before the Council from time to time) and submitted that- the petitiowrs now considered the time, specially opportune to press their claims. It was decided to remind Mr. White of the Council's previous suggestion—that the settlers of tlr? district should raise a loan for the purpose. PLYMOUTH ROAD LOAN", It was decided to sfrike a special rate of %d in the £ over the special rating area in the Okalo riding, to secure a loan of £OOO for m'tailing Upper Plymouth road. DEPUTATIONS. They 'expected that this latest delay was due to the upsetting of the departure of the New Zealand steamers from London in #h« early stages of tile New Zealand strike. The Controller anil Auditor-General wrote that the payment of the chairman's expenses, to which exception had been taken by the Audit Office, had now been legalised by the Counties Aet Amendment Act which had just been passed, and councils 'had now power to pay their chairmen lixed expenses up 1 to' CIOO per annum, and such power was , retrospective from April, 1912. He thanked the chairman and the clerk for their courteous assistance in the matter. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote with reference to the. Council's enquiry as to whether any assistance would be given to the county in regai'd to making a survey of some reserves granted to the county. He stated that the reserves in question had been held by the Council for. 30 years, and the. Council had been drawing a revenue from tlivm during the greater part of the time. The Department could not. see its way to take any aeI tion in the matter. The surveys existing when the Council took over the lands were sufficient for its requirements then.
