'• He arrived in New Zealand in 1870, join- '• ign his parents at Auckland, where they ;' had been settled for some years. By , 1800 he was taking a prominent part [ in farming affairs and the following year ; - he became president of the Auckland A. j and P. Association. In 1-893 he was elec'l ted .president of the New Zealand Nas tional Association and made his entry '• into Parliament as jiiember for Waitematrt, in 1804. Three years later he was , elected for the Franklin seat and has re- . presented that constituencv ever since. From 180 ft to (003 he acted as Whip for the Conservative Opposition, and in the latter year became leader of the party. On July 10th, 1012, ho became Prime Minister on the defeat of the Mackenr zie Government. There are only two _' other Privy Councillors in the Dominion '' —The Right Hon. Sir Jospeh Ward . (ISO7I and the Right Hon. Sir Joshua Williams (1013). Sir Charles Rowen; now a K.O.M.C.is the Speaker of the Legislative Council. He was born in IS3O and arrived in New Zealand in 1850 with the first party of Canterbury settlers, aiding in the formalf tion of the settlement. From 1853 to d 1804 he was a member of the Canter;j bury Provincial C'ounci, and for ten years ~ afterwards was-Resident Magistrate at ('•lirUtchurch. In 1874 he was called to the Upper House and became Minister of Justice in the Vogel Ministry. The i- following year be resigned and was rot turned to the Lower House as member for Kaiapoi, occupying the seat for three Parliaments, lie held portfolios in the Pollen Ministry, the second Vogel Mint istry and the Atkinson Ministry. Sir ■> Charles was the author of the Education -' Act in 1877. He was appointed a life 1 member of the Legislative Council in f 1801 and has been Speaker since July, 1005. lie was created a Knight Bachelor in 1910.
Professor John Shand, created a C.M.G. was born in 1834. He was mathematical master of the Ayr and Edinburgh Academies and cann- out to New Zealand in 1871 to fake up an appointment as Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the Otago University. In IXBO the'work was divided and he took the chair of Natural Philosohpv, which he lias retained ever since. In' IBS!) he was made an honorary L.L.D. of Aberdeen. He was a member of the Rovaf Commission on the New Zealand University in 1877-70 and has always taken a prominent part in educational affairs, being on the Otago Education Board (several times chairman), the Otago University Council, and the Senate of the New Zealand University.
