Captain Lane, master of the schooner Polar Rear, has written to the Navy Department stating that Anderson's party, belonging to Stefannson's Arctic expedition, is safe in winter quarters with (he supply vessels Alaska and Mary Sachs, which hitherto have been believed to be lost. Nothing farther is known regarding 1 Stefannson's fate, tat the Navy Department officials are confident that lie is safe. A NEW ZEALAND MEMBER. l?y Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Considerable local interest attaches to the various reports, which have been received regarding the fate of the Stefannson scientific expedition to the Arctic regions, owing to the fact that the party includes Mr D. Jenness, of Lower Hutt. While feeling a good deal of uneasiness as to his brother's welfare, Mr. G- A. Jenness told a reporter yesterday that he placed very little credit on the report received. If there had been any semblance of truth in the reports, he explained, the family would have been ad-' vised by the Canadian Government, as the lotto: was under that obligation. The Government had forwarded Mr. Jenness remittances regularly every month, but had not mentioned anything to cause special anxiety. Mr. Jenness also explained that his brother was' not actually with St'efaivnson, 'hut that he was a member of the southern party.
