When tire tapes lifted, Glentlljosli, •a whom veteran "Joey" James/ had > the,, mount, swung round and toeik n» part in the race. The others moved off
Kttvct Van and Patroness, with Salabhiel and San Due following. Florist held her lead all the way, and Sweet Van could not make any impression on her. Sun Due, who was very sore, came last hearing tire turn, but then carried out wide. Patroness was never dangerous,
and Florist passed the post three lengths in front of Sweet Van, with Sail Due a couple of lengths away third and Patroness and Saiat'hiel next. Thirteen were saddled up for the Cardiff Stakes, C-arloumu and Brunswick being the public's elect. A fair start saw Tyson well out in front of Brunswick and Martingale, with St. Hubert at the rear of the string. Tysj>n was still in front nt the turn, and though Brunswick .finished gamely under punishment the former easily held an advantage of a couple of lengths in the run home. Zion | rim into third place at the distance, but ! was eased, and Patronata bent him home for third .money. Carloman was fifth and Wliauga last. Backers were not slow to recognise that Zctes was pitchforked into the Ngaeiv. Handicap, and Hie Waverleytrained gelding wa.s made a very warm order. Scratehings reduced the field to four, Gerberga, Tiradamantc and Sector Girl being reserved for later emits. When the tapes lifted ZHes dashed off first-, followed by Red Lupin, Boronia and Tetikura. Tlr.-ee furlongs from home the pony headed Ze.tes, but at the bend the favorite" ran past Red Lupin
and easily stalled o(T Tetikura. winning bv a length. Boronia was a close third ami Rid Lupin last. The time (Imin 14 ]-s.sec.) given for the race was exceptionally f:\st for the Stratford course. All started in the Makuri Hurdles, the first d'ay's winner, Kurnalpi, being the |ieaviest-hacked. though Timothy did not lacl; .supporters. Looplini: led oil' from Wnrea and Timothy as thev ran into the straight, the favorite being lastWaim fell at the second fence, and Loopline led Timothy past the stand. A bad jump sent Loopline lwek, and Timothy was in front at the seven furlongs post, where Kurnalpi commenced to ininrove his position. Six furlongs from home Timothy and Kurnalpi vn'e abreast, but the former gained at the next obs'tiicle and! drew elcur of his opponent. Timothy turned for home first and won very easily by lialf-a-dox'-ii lengths from Knnialpi. Loopline was four lengths further back, and Floss last. Of the nine runners in the Straihmore Hack Handicap. Bradamante and Lady Ami were, b.'-st-hacked. From a good start Galtee hopped out first, but hud ; not'gone far before lie was pushed on to the rails and lost" his rider. Simple Sam then dashed to the front-and put a big stretch of day-light between himself and Lady Ami, Bradamante and Rector Girl being the most prominent of the others. At the turn Simple Sam was four lengths in front of tlio tiring Lady i Ami and Crawford and Rector Girl came, fast. A great finish resulted. Simple Sam just keeping going long enough to beat Crawford by half a length, with Rector Girl, Lady Ami and the rest all bunched close up. . Draft and Conney dropped out of the : Dominion Handicap, leaving eight runners. Ngatiruanui and and Rewi Yolo | carried the bulk of five money. Ngati- j ruanui caused no' end of trouble at the barrier, but Cameron succeeded in sending the crowd off in a perfect line — no mean achievement with rascals like i Xgatirufliiui and Styrax in the lot. Rewi j Poto at once forged ahead and led White Crane, Mulga Bill and a bunched lot. passing- -the stand. Aiuake changed | places with Mulga Bill running past the i seven furlongs post. Along the back i' Rmvi Poto was- out three lengths from i White Crane, and then came Ariiake, Invader, Mulga Bill, Minora and the favorite last. Bowling into the straight with a big lead- Rewi Poto was never troubled. winning by three lengths from White Crane. Arnake was a poor fourth, just in front of Invader and Xgatiruamii. mid then came .Mulga Bill. Styrax 1 and Minora. j'
Nine gentlemen riders were called upon to steer the starters in the Ladies' Purse. ;Pikiteapa was best-backed. The start was a good one, and Silver Hope led a bum-bed crowd to the turn. John Willie, 'Pikitcapa, Butcher Boy and Patroon then came strongly. Butcher Boy wa-i the first to straighten up, but Jte had to do his best to stall off a late run by Pikitcapa. John Willie was a close third and Ihen came Millbanks and Patroon. Ba-v Prince and Martingale were scratched for the County Hack Handicap, and six hoises went to tlic post. Ratana was first away, followed by Gerberga and Wild Lupin, Conney being caught in the tapes and losing ground. Ratana made llu- pace a. cracker to the distance, where Gerberga came fast and won in good stvie by a narrow margin. Wild Lupin was dose up third, Patroness fourth ami Conney last.
