UNION COMPANY'S NEW STEAMER. Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Union Steamship Company's new turbine steamer Wahine, arrived at Port Chalmers at noon yesterday from Glasgow, via Algiers, Port Said, Aden, Colombo, and Bunbury, Fine weather prevailed until after leaving the latter port, when she met with some heavy south-westerly gales :'iid high seas, which lasted until nearing the New Zealand coast. On the voyage out, the Wahine averaged 14y» knots throughout, but she can increase that speed to 22 knots when required. Bhe is claimed to be the fastest passenger steamer owned in Australasian waters, and her officers describe her as being a wonderfully steady vessel in rough weather. She can accommodate SoO passengers, and carries boats for all. BREAK!NT! AND ENTERING CHARGES. Cliristchurch, Last Night. The police arrested two men to-day on charges of breaking and entering, and the authorities are of the opinion that one of them will prove to be the burglar who has been operating extensively in the city ami suburbs recently. Two further burglaries are reported, the residences of Mr. George Harris, barrister and solicitor, and of Mr. W. 0. Jamieson, builder and contractor, having been entered, and valuables stolen. WESTPORT HARBOR BOARD. Westport, Last Night. On Saturday, the Westport Harbor Board dealt with the first batch of applications under its re-organisation scheme. The engineers and officers ou the dredge flotilla were reinstated. L. Larsen was appointed mechanical superintendent, D. Darrach foreman carpenter, and J. Hawes inspector of the quarry and in charge of the Railway. The Board decided to ask the Government to make an enquiry into the past conduct of the Board's affairs. BANKRUPTCY DISCHARGE REFUSED. Gisborne, June 2S. The Supreme Court refused a discharge in bankruptcy asked for by John Drummond, sawmiller, of Matawai, the judge remarking that 'he had gone into bankruptcy through the Native. Land Court, through having financed the cutting up of the Native township at Nuhaka into 2nO sections and assigning owners for each section. The Natives are very jubilant, as the sections are bound to find their way into the market, and it is expected that an extensive township will bo established in the centre of a rich district. HEAVY WEATHER. Auckland. June 2S. The steamer Huratiui, which arrived from London on the morning of June 15, encountered a lieavv gale. Big seas swept the decks, carried away the railing, and washed overboard a portion of the deck cargo of naptha and acids. The steamer ran before the gale for several hours, avoiding further damage.
