LABOR OPTIMISTIC. "FIERCEST POLITICAL BATTLE FOR YEARS." Christchurch, June 26. ; The Labor Party is very optimistic in regard to the Greymouth election. Mr. R. Semple, who arrived in Christchurch from the West Coast last night, stated to-day that Mr. P. C. Webb had begun his campaign with great vigor and under most auspicious circumstances. He had addressed several meetings already, and was "going strong," gaining popularity as he went. The other candidates had not actually begun, but their committees were at work and were making preparations. The public would se« on the West Coast the fiercest battle that had taken place in New Zealand for many years. The Labor Partv would fight cleanly and honorably, placing principles before personalities, and if the other parties fought in the same spirit, the contest would be instructive as well as interesting. Mr. Semple added that ho had spent several days in the constituency holding meetings and setting up committees and Professor W. T.
