BUTTER AND CHEESE. AT THE HAWERA WINTER SHOW. Taranaki owes its prosperity to the part played in its development by Madame Cow. Consequently it is only fitting that, at a winter show, dairy produee should be given a prominent place. At the Hawera Winter" Show there is indeed a fine exhibit of butter and cheese, which is very attractively displayed in the roomy dairy hall of the buildings. One cannot fail to view the pyramids of cheese and glass-covered boxes of butter without being impressed with the importance of the industry to the Do- ■ minion. The greenery interspersed between the exhibits has a pleasing ef- | feet. At the end of the hall is a. show case containing seven handsome diallenge trophies, which all dairy factory managers are keen on securing. Cheese this year only drew 60 entries, as against 99 last year, whilst butter drew- 03, an increase of one. Factories all over New Zealand competed in the open classes. The Tariki Cheese Factory (Mr. J. McElroy, manager) won in I six out of seven classes of cheese, and the manager secures quite a sheaf of trophies. He was also second in the other class. He therefore secures the Hawera Licensed Victuallers' Association Challenge Cup, valued at £lO 10s, and [also a valuable trophy, presented by the ( New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers' -Association. He holds for the year the Stiaw-Saville Cup of £25 for the maker scoring the highest aggregate points in all open classes—(This he also held in 1911.) —as well as the Lane & Co. Cup for highest points in white and colored cheese. The Taieri & Peninsula Dairy Company, which won the only other class, also won the New Zealand Dairyman's special prize of £5 as for the best matured cheese, and also a gold medal for the maker securing "highest points in any open class. Kaupokonui and Kaponga, which won most of the prizes last year, could only secure seconds and thirds. In.the butter classes, Glen Oroua (A. Cameron) was the most successful, winning in two classes, and got a leg in for the Dominion Dairy Company's two £lO 10s cups. Riyerdale Dairy Company (M. W. Forsyth) wins the Taranaki championship, and secures Gillies & Nalder's Challenge Cup. The detailed results are as follows: Open to all factories in New Zealand.
