CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
A QUESTION 1 OF AWARDS. Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A Daily Times reporter waited on Mr. R. lircen, secretary of the Trades and Labor Council to-day, and asked his opinion on the unsatisfactory industrial position, which has arisen in Christchurch, as thu result of the ditliculty in getting recommendations from the Conciliation Council made into awards when they come before the Arbitration Court. Mr. Breen, states that in order to overcome the dilliculty experienced in Christchurch, brought about by the faulty drafting of clause 2, of section 7, of the Act, the unions in Dunedin have in every I case where an award was sought taken advantage of clause B of the same section, and lodged a formal objection to the recommendation of the Council of Conciliation. Clause !i states that if any party to a dispute signifies its disagreement with a recommendation the dispute shall be referred by the clerk of the court for settlement, and the Court may incorporate a recommendation' in the award. Mr. l'.recn said that if the words 'Tiled by parties" had been replaced b, ''and filed by the court," everything would have been all right. lie also stated that several awards in Auckland were recently ruled out of order under similar circumstances'to''those in Christchurch, and he understood that the Minister of Labor intended having the Act amended in the direction indicated, and that in the meantime the Christehureh unions had better file a formal objection to every recommendation agreed upon by the Conciliation Council being made into an award.
