NAPIER SESSIONS. Per Press Association. Napier, Last Night. In opening the Supreme Court, Mr: Justice Chapman, remarking on the light calendar, said that there was almost a total absence of serious crime. "I have had the same experience in Palmerston and Wanganui," he said, "and the general condition, so far as crime is concerned, is very satisfactory." Roland Birdling, on a charge of obtaining credit for £8 by falsely repre-t sehting himself as a detective, pleaded guilty, and was ordered to come up for' sentence when called upon. John Ellis Smith, charged with demanding money under threat to discharge a revolver, and for assault, was acquitted. George , Wilson ililne, for opening a postal! packet, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. HAMILTON SESSIONS. Hamilton, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, George P. Baskerville was acquitted on a charge of indecent assault on a girl aged 14 at Te Aroha. Judge Cooper described the verdict as an extraordinary one, and granted leave to appeal for a new trial.
