A meeting of the Freedom League in the Botanic Park protested against the cruel treatment of cadets imprisoned for non-attendance at drill. The speakers were hustled off the stands and howled down, and the gathering broke up in disorder.
LENIENT SENTENCES. Sydney, dune Hi. The Woodfordleigh branch of the Farmers' Union passed a resolution against the leniency of the Government in remitting death sentences and thereby encouraging murder and other serious crimes.

Yates and Thorns' engineering works at Blackburn have been burnt. The ; damage was £130,000.
