Dr. 11. W. Robertson has resigned his position as senior house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital. A Sydney cablegram states that Mr. McGowens resignation will take effect from the end of the month. The death is announced in his seventyeighth year of Mr. Alexander Naismith senr of Rona Bay, an old resident of Wellington. Mr. D. L. A. Astbury was the recipient of a. presentation at a smoke concert in Lltham last night under the auspices of the Egmont Liberal League. t During the'absence of General God- ' ley in England, Colonel Heard, Chief of the General Staff, will assume command of the defence forces of the Dominion. Mr. Speaker Willis, on behalf of the New South AVales Parliament, has cabled condolences to Mr. Massey and Lady Guinness on the death of Sir Ar- ' tluir, Guiness. • While in Auckland on a holiday visit Mr. A. W. Budge found it desirabls to undergo an operation, and his many friends will be glad to learn he is progressing favorably towards recoverySir James Carroll is reported to be making an excellent recovery from his recent illness. He is now able to see '. a tew of his friends occasionally, an d hopes to he well enough to leave his bed next week. Van Heck, late conductor ot J. o. Williamson's principal orchestra " arrived by the mail train on Thursday evening, and will assume his position as musical director at the Empire Tlieatro on Monday evening next. The death occurred on Wednesday evening of Mr. Richard E. Hewitt, one of the original New Zealand Land Company s settlers, who came to Wellington i ?T ai ?, a P 0 . in the shi P Adelaide (after which Adelaide road is named), and was a. fellow-passenger of the late Mr. T. \Y. MeKenzie. Mrs. Henry Putt, an old and respected rmident of New Plymouth, died somewhat suddenly yesterday. She was seized with an apoplectic fit when returning from the Winter Show on Thursday night, and never rallied. She was 72 Tears o age, and arrived in New Plymouth by one of the first boats. • • A representative meeting was held in the Stratford Borough Council Chambers last ni ff ht. presided o ver by His Worship the Mayor and decided to make a presentation from the. citizens to Dr Car-' bery on the eve of his departure to the Old Country.
