It menaces health, us the streets are not swept, the gutters are clogged, and the sewage purification works are at a standstill. The crude effluent is being discharged into the river. Strikers are blocking amateur scavengers. The men demand increases! wages and better conditions. The union was not authorised to strike.

SHIPPING STRIKE SUSPENDED. Received 12, 10.40 p.m. London, June 12. As a result of the shipyard conference at Edinburgh notices of a strike have been suspended. A ballot has been ordered regarding the masters' offer to increase wages by it shilling a week and by 2% per cent, to riveters, and concerning the institution of a neutral chairman.
