BUTTER AND CHEESE
AT THE WINTER SHOW. • . QUALITY PRAISED BY JUDGES. •-A FINE DISPLAY.' Our two great- staple products—butter and cheese—were given a prominent place at the Taranaki Winter Show in New Plymouth yesterday, and, as a glance at the awards will show, the quality \'.-:-.3 <v>'fcptionally good. Interviewed by a News representative, Mr. J. Johnston, one of the judges, said that he had no fault to find with the quality of the butter, and he remarked also upon the absence of staleness, usually noticeable in stored butter. There was an evenness of quality, as shown by the fact that, there were no exhibits under 02 points. "Well up to the standard of usual exports," was his condensed op'.nion. Speaking of cheese, Mr. W. Grant, another judge, prefaced his remarks with the statement that it was rather disappointing , that, seeing there were bo many cheese factories operating in Taranaki, a larger number did not come forward and exhibit. As to the cheese Shawn, Mr. Grant said that the quality was very satisfactory indeed,-and the top prize-winner's exhibit was a credit to the maker, being, a remarkably fine cheese,' The Tariki dairy factory, of which Mr. J. McElroy is manager, had quite a day out, winning in each of the four classes. This factory last year won the class lor which the New Zealand Shipping Company presented a £25 trophy. By winning this twice it becomes the absolute property pf the Tariki.Dairy Co. In the points prize, the Society's gold medal for the highest aggregate points scored in classes 1 and 2, was won by the Omata Dairy Co. (C. Jensen, maker), with 189y 2 points.
