MILITARY DETENTION. Per Pr«se Association. Christchurch, Last N:ght. Two youths, for failure to pity their fines for breaches of the l>efence Act. were to-day each consignqd to 49 days' military detention at Fort Jervois, Rip;; Island. These are the first youths ..o be awarded military detention instead of gaol in Canterbury. The youths are Walter James Hooper and Harold William Thackwell. Hooper was convicted and fined for refusing to take the oath and failing to render service, well for failing to take the oatft,\failing to attend drill,'and failing, to Tender service. Hooper's fines' amounted to £B, and ThaekvrcH's to £8 10s, these being equivalent to 49 days' detention.
