McLoughlin defeated Doust in three straight sets; thus America won the j preliminary tie for the Daris Cup. HOW AMERICA WON. New York, June 9. . The score in the McLoughlin-Doust match was 0-4, 6-4, (5-2. The severity of McLoughlin's service and returns caused the downfall of Doust, who was unable to handle the ball propelled by McLoughlin at a terrific speed in a manner suitable for consistent placing. Doust's best asset was a slow, low ball, hardly rising six inches above the top of the net, which made it difficult for McLoughlin to us? his one-hand smash. , ... The-Australian took his defeat in a sportsmanlike manner. After shaking McLoughlin's hand he seized the umpire's megaphone and asked the crowd .to join him in three cheers for the American team, which were given with a will. Cheers for the Australians followed.
