LAWN TENNIS.

DEFEAT OF WILDING,

By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. . London, June 8.

I In the Northern Tennis Championship | Parke defeated Wilding, 6 —2, 7 —5, 6 —B, j 2-6, 7-5. •

THE DAVIS CUP.

Of the winners of the singles in New York on Saturday—McLoughlin and Williams —"Austral," of the Sydney Referee, has this to say:—"McLaughlin's chief fault is wildnesa and inaccuracy in his ground strokes. His service has always been aptly described as diabolical. It is an 'American' of immense pace and break, and lie follows it in like a comet, and once at the net the play of his racquet is like a rapier—swift, sure and telling. Overhead lie is terrific in his severity, but a shade too daring. In receiving service he relies on his antioipa- ' tion and catlike quickness of foot to take everything on his forehand. In | the doubles in Christchurcb- last January ; twelvemonth I do not recall hrn playing one service on his backhand, m ot Brookes' accurate placing. Wiliiajtps Relieves in going for the shot almost al-. ways. He takes big chances in doing so. but it is this very fact that makes his game so dangerous to the adversary. | Yet he is not foolhardy, and does not disdain to make an easy shot by a wide ' margin. He is simply determined to win the points decisively, and he has confidence he can do so. He uses sepond service (American), as fast as.,)iis first j and it generally pays him, and makes usually few doubles. He is good both back and forehand, and is a sound baseline player, but takes great risks to get to the net early, and always on his service. His volleying is always severe.".
