THE COASTAL RAILWAY.
The chairman of the ; New PlymouthQpunake- Railway League (Mr.- A. H. Johnstone) informs us that the League hfis not been idle lately, and has done everything it possibly can to urge upon thy Government the, necessity for passing a Districts Railways B t ill this coming session. Mr. E. Maxwell, a leading spirit in the movement, is at present in Wellington, and has gone thoroughly into the matter with the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. W. Fraser), with the result that a number of suggestions pul forward by the executive of the League as to the form of legislation required have been approved of. This is very satisfactory news. The Government, of course, is committed to passing a District Railways Bill this session, if power to construct district railways by local bodies does not at' present exist—and wc do not think it does—and can hardly go back on its word. At the same time, the approaching session is likely to be a particularly operand it is advisable to keep the Government up to the mark. The League should in nowise relax its efforts,, but, keep a vigilant eye on a measure the, passing of which must ic-siilt in immense advantage to the whole district.
