BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY REPORTS. The following reports will be consiuerecl at the meeting of the Borough Council this evening:— ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The borough engineer reported as fol-lows:—Thirty-six chains of metalling and ■230 cubic yards of patching had be,en done on various streets and roads, a considerable amount of repairing to streets and footpaths having been' necessary owing to heavy rain. Thirty-four chains of footpath had been re-formed, and 10 chains covered with gaol gravel. One concrete culvert, 11) in in diameter and ■2l feet long had been laid down: on Brooklands road to replace a decayed timber one. Seventy-two feet of smaller pipes had been laid in various streets. I The Bin water main was now complete to the Taranaki Oil Wells refinery. Twelve connections had been laid. Seven men were employed on the electric light tail race and the water had been Towered about 3ft. Formation work in Leach street hid been held up owing to wet weather. Approximately 16 chains of metalling had been laid down, blinded and rolled. In P'endarves street the sewer was now complete. Li'ardet street sewer had been lowered from the centre of Leach street northward', for a distance of two chains. This work was necessary in order to connect Leach street and Liardet street sewers. Leach street sewer should be completed in about ten (lays. jfell street sewer waa now complete;.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The electrical engineer (Mr. H. Black) reported that during the past month tliiload had steadily increased, the maximum recorded' being 280-k.w. on Saturday, 31st inst. As the river had been above normal, ample water had been available. It was necessary now to- run the new set and one of the others on Saturday evenings. Tliirty new connections had been; put 011 during the month, making a total to date of 1120. Repair work on the transmission line had been completed.- Some more street lamp brackets had been renewed' and reflectors "which were getting rugt'ed' were being cleaned and re-painted. The insulated cables ordered 1 had come- to hand'. The extension expenditure for the month of May amounted to £l2' 2i5 odl
ABATTOIR Rlu'ORT.
The abattoir report showed that the following were slaughtered for local consumption: —172 cows, 20 bullocks, 10 calves, 682 sheep, 86 lambs, 171 pigs, 0 goats. Compared with the corresponding month of last year they showed an increase of 11 cattle; 1' calf, 65 sheepj 7 lambs, 6' goats, and' 38 tripes, and a decrease of 81 pigs. Tliere were condemned 2 cows, 7 pigs and 1 slieep. Three cows, 6' bullocks and lo bull's were slaughtered for export, a decrease.of„4B head. One cow was condemned! Tlie fees forthe month amounted' to £137 8s fld', rents £3' 5s fid, extraordinary traffic fees 23 Sd, making a total' of ■ £l4O 16s 6d, and a decrease as compared witli l'ast j ear of £9''lss 3d'.
WORKS COMMITTEE! The Works' Committee reported that provided the Department could supply the valuation, rolls" oil: or- beforeDecember 17 next, the terms offered, by tlie Valuation. Department for. a r.e-v,ali> ation of the borough; be accepted;- thai the seal of. tlie borough be affixed: t«. debenture No. 4, of. the St. Aubyn. district loan of £4830,. and: that the Mayor and treasurer be authorised to sign the-same on behalf of the Council;, that tlie borough engineer, be authorised to. proceed with tlie necessary formation of Mbturoa road at the Taranaki. Oil Wells* siding, and) that, pending the raising; of tne streets, loan,, the cost pf:' the work, estimated at £45, be advanced, from the District Fund' Acoount;- that tile petition- lor the extension of the watermains. to Sjiotswoad : district be> referred' to the borough engineer to.report upon;: that tlie borough engineer be instructed to report upon the question of dealing with the storm water on Avenue road?; that the plans of house numbering of I Gill street and Molesworth street be l approved';- that consideration of the borougn engineer's report with reference to the formation of' a footpath- on- thesouth side- of' Shortland' street be deferred until the Council have viewed the street; that the borough engineer- be authorised to extend the sewers in Fillis street, as recommended' by him (esti-mated'-cost, £l2).
ELECTRIC LIGHT' COMMITTEE. The Electric Light Committee reported::—That the application of the. Thara-na-ki Agricultural Society for- tlie Council to temporarily instal the electric light in No. 2 annex at King George's Hall be acceded to, the Society refunding all expenditure and paying the lighting charges, the Council lending the material; that Mr. Boulton bp informed that provided he erects, a dwelling on his property on Fi'ankley road the Council will extend the electric light mains to enable his house to be connected; that the electrical engineer be authorised to apply for extension of the area included in the Government license as indicated -jV tne committee; that the question of purchasing 200 meters and four miles of insulated wire bo referred to the chairman, with power to act; that the horough engineer be authorised to give effect to his recommendations for the raising of the waterworks screens at the forebay.
RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee reported:— That tlis application of the Hospital Boartl for permission to enclose a further block in the cemetery be acceded to, and that the borough engineer be authorised to survey a block adjoining, as indicated by the committee, and also to move back the southern fence to its proper position; that the chairman be authorised to provkle extra seating accommodation for tlie Fitzroy Hall, the cost not to exceed £ls; that 200 trees be supplied to the custodian of the reservoir to be planted on uie reservoir reserve; that provided the turnstile entrance to the Recreation Grounds be
shifted back, as indicated by the chairman, the application of the Taranaki Jockey Club for permission to cut down about six pimts insignia trees in wie racecourse reserve he granted; that subject to the Council having first'claim thereto, the New Plymouth Brotherhood Debating Society be granted the use of the Council Chambers every Tuesday evening during tne months of June to September (inclusive), the charge to be 4s per night; that in future the charge for the use of the Council Chambers be 4s per evening meeting; that the borough engineer be instructed to attend to the fencing of the part of the Mt. Bryon reserve, at present leased to "Mr. G. Knight, and to have the gorse grubbed; that notice be given to the Council's tenants requiring them to comply with the conditions of their leases regarding painting; that the Works Committee be requested to put the roadway at the entrance to the cemetery in order. ABATTOIR COMMITTEE. The Abattoir Committee reported:— That the draft agreement with Messrs Sole Bros, with reference to the offal anu diseased meat at the abattoir, as amended by the committee, be approved, the agreement to finally terminate on April 0, 1916; that the seal of the borough be affixed to the agreement and tho
chairman and his Worship the Mayor be appointed to sign the agreement on behalf of the Council; that the borough engineer be instructed to put Clemow road and the Abattoir road in order; that the Abattoir road from the starving paddock to the entrance gate to the abattoir be graded and metalled.
