THE GREAT NORTHERN STEEPLECHASE. , BERCOLA'S VICTORY.

The victory of Mr. J. E. L. Stanford's : horse Bercola (by The Officer imp Noon) in the Great Northern Steeplechase at Auckland, on Tuesday, created immense satisfaction in Stratford on Tuesday, the horse being owned and trained there. The victory did not bring much foreign gold to the town, for, after his finishing out of a place in the Great Northern Hurdle Race on the first day, when he was well backed, the chestnut gelding was comparatively neglected by his admirers, who were confidently predicting that he would win the big double. It now transpires that in the Hurdle Race he struck tlie first fence heavily, and this naturally, in a race of that calibre, effectually settled his chance. In the Steeplechase, however, the Century Hurdles winner made no mistake, for always being In a handy position he took charge at the last fence and won comfortably. Th« horse is a natural jumper, and is gifted with a strong turn of speed, and should he remain sound he ought to win other good races. The full details of the race are now to hand. Paritutu and Dorando were the first over the first fence, Just clear of The Native, Dorando, Bismarck, Glenmore and Bercola, and so they ran to the water jump,. where Glenmore ranged up alongside Paritutu. Bismarck came to grief at the old water jump, and the next obstacle accounted for The Native, who was, however, remounted. Going over the hill the second time Paritutu and Glenmore were still making the pace, being two lengths, clear of Red McGregor, who was three lengths in front of Dorando, Okaihau and Bercola, Hautere being a long way back. At the double Glenmore was showing in front of,Paritutu, who was three lengths clear of Okaihau, Bercola, Red McGregor, and Dorando, Hautere being three lengths further back. Okaihau .went to the front along the back, but just before the hill was reached he broke down, and was pulled up. Glenmore reached the summit a length in front of Bercola, with Paritutu, Hautere, Dorando and Red McGregor all handy. Glenmore tired at the straight entrance, whfere Dorando put in ■ » claim. Hautere also made a forward move, and Bercola led at the last hurdle. Once over, Bercola drew away, and, stalling off Dorando and Paritutu,' won by four lengths. Hautere was fourth, Glenmore fifth. Red McGregor sixth. The Native pulled up. Time, Bmin. 20sec.
