THE DERBY. , WINNER DISQUALIFIED. 1 AN UNFORTUNATE RACE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyrignt. J London, June 4. Tlio Derby, run at Epsom, resulted:— Craganour 1, Aboyeur 2, Louvois 3. A protest was lodged against the winner for bumping in the straight. The objection was sustained, making the result: Aboyeur 1, Louvois 2, Great Sport 3. The race was rat in brilliant weather. Their Majesties and the Duke of Connauglit were present. There was a record crowd. After aii excellent start, Aboyeur dashed away and Craganour moved into second place descending the Bushes Hill. Aboyeur was still leading at Tottenham Corner with Craganour, Shogun, Day and Comet following. Louvois joined issue at the distance, arid a tremendous tussle resulted. Craganour, challenging, won a bumping finish by a head, with Louvois a neck behind Aboyeur. Wootton on Shogun was unlucky. He | attempted to get through on the inside twice, and failed. The time was 2min. 37 3-ssec. Mr. A. P- Cunliffe, the owner of Aboyeur, declined to lodge a protest, but the stewards took the initiative and examined J. Reiff, who was riding Craganour, and Piper, who was, riding Aboyeur. It is the first disqualification since 1844; ■ , ; Received 5, 9.45 p.m.' London. June 5. The stewards found that Craganor interfered with other horses, as well as boring and bumping Ahoysur. j AN ACCIDENT AT EPSOM. Received 5, 5.5 p.m. London, June 4. During the Stowards Handicap, following the Derby, Felizaado fell and was subsequently shot. Whalley, his jockey, was seriously injured.
Craganour, who, won and lost the Epsom Derby, was, as cabled last week, a hot favorite for the blue riband. Disqualifications in a big three-year-old race are few and far between. It is nearly seventy years since the judge's placing was upset. Last season Craganour was the leading two-year-old, winning five races brilliantly. Louvois, who finished third in the Derby, narrowly defeated Craganour in the Two Thousand Guineas, but the latter easily beat his rival in the Newmarket Stake's of a mile and a quarter a fortnight ago, proving the bay son of Desmond to be the better stayer. Aboyeur was one of the rank outsiders, and his victory would be a great turn up for the ring. r I AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
