COMPULSORY SERVICE.
HOW THE SCHEME IS VIEWED IN ENGLAND. HON. ALLEN INTERVIEWED. Auckland, Tuesday. Questioned on the working of the Ter- ! ritorial system at Home, the Hon. Allen said that practically everyone there upheld the New Zealand Territorial system, "even those," he remarked, "who are not upholding the Territorial system in England. The reason is that they" all feel that New Zealand is doing the right thing. There is a great deal of s misrepresentation of the New Zealand system being circulated. at Home, but the people value it for what it is worth. As a matter of fact, they take no notice of it. The Territorial system at Home [ does not go far enough, and does not pro- | vide what I think shoujd be essential j for a Territorial defence force in England, but Lord Roberts is making great I headway, and it is astonishing how pub- ■ lie opinion is changing ion the subject. While I was at Home I addressed a public meeting at Bradford among other towns, on this question, and although Bradford is supposed to, be what you would call a hot place at which to ven--1 ture on the subject, I received an excellent hearing, which I think is significant."
