THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
SUPERANNUATION.
Per Press Association. Wellington, June 4,
A number of officers of the Public Service will shortly be retired, either owing to length of service, orf under the age limit of 65 years. Intimation to this effect has been conveyed to the heads of departments in which such officers are engaged, but the names will not be available for publication until those who are to be retired have been duly notified. It., is understood that the provisions of the Act will be strictly complied With by the Public Service Commissioner. The officers affected are to be given six months' notice. That is, they will cease duty on Sept. 30, after which they will have three months' leave of absence on full pay, as provided by the Act. Those who are retired include a number of officers high up in the service, and in such cases the pensions which they will receive will be substantial. In other instances, however, where the pay is small, and men joined the service at an advanced age, an effort will, it is stated, be made to get Parliamentary authority for a contribution to be made from the consolidated revenue towards such pensions. In fact, it is suggested that there will be a pension minimum retirement for officers occupying prominent positions. Amongst those who have already been notified of their retirement are Mr. Amelius Smith, secretary of the Superannuation Board, and Mr. 1). R. Purdye, second clerk of the income branch of the. Tax Department.
