THE ARAWA MAORIS.
RETURN FROM ENGLAND.
TOUR A FAILURE.
The remaining members' of the Arawa troupe of Maoris,, who in 1010 left New Zealand under the guidance' of Maggie, Papakura, returned from England oft Saturday by the S.S. Paparoa. FmttHei* ally, their lour has been a failure, and all are glad to be back in New, Zealand. Speaking to a Dominion representative on the arrival of the Paparoa on Saturday, Chief Paroa T&ftiati, and the Meter tary of the company, Mr. Nuku, briefly explained some of the reasons Which ; led to the members getting into financial difficulties while, in England. Their first appearance in England wa's at the Crystal Palace, but 'owing to their Maori village beingi condemned, they bad to move on. Their next engagement was at the White City, but they had difficulties over 'their wages, and, when the engagement ended, they were all thoroughly disheartened. Twelve of the girls appeared at the Palace Theatre, London, for some time, but the rest had to receive assistance from the New Zealand Government.
WTien half the troupe retur*ed to New Zealand, late in 1911, the remaining twenty members decided to make a tour of the South of England, under the control of Mr. W. Andrews, of Hampstead. Many towns were visited, but ill-luck seemed' to dog the Maoris, for again the loss was heavy. There were too many entertainments in England at the time, consequently the Maori performances were not patronised to any extent. Eventually, after* many vicissitudes in and 1 about London, it was decided to apply to the New Zealand. High Commissioner for assistance Back to New Zealand.
"PAPAROA" TAWHAL • , Prior to the arrival of the vessel at Hobart, a baby girl was born to two members,of the troupe, the parents be* ing Rua Tawhfii and Hdra Tawhai. This was the second child born to this couple since they left New Zealand, one baby having first seen the light of day in London. Needless to say, the Paparoa baby has been named after this ship. The "star" of the troupe, Iwa, Kefeti, has remained in England, where she fa doing well. She has a beautiful con-', tralto voice, which is gaining great praise wherever she goes. On the voyage out the Maoris' were the centre of attraction on the. ship, and gave many entertainments' iri aid of seamen's charities. The passage w« fine all the way, and tl>e ship made one of her fastest runs. The passengers were laud in their praise of the manner in which Commander N. E. Bower and all the officers of the ship laid themselves out to help to entertain the passengers. Every night a concert or dance was held on board. At Hobart the captain gave the children a treat by taking them to a picture show entertainment. -/""" At Hobart, Captain Bower heard of the death of his father, Captain Bower, :late town clerk of Napier. * Chief Paora Tamati also learnt of the death of his mother when the vessel reached HobaTt,
The entertainment given by the Maoris on board, in aid of the seamen's charities, was greatly appreciated, and at the conclusion Captain Bower' sail that he would like publicly to thank ; Chief PaoraTamati and each individual member of the troupe for the great trouble the.v had taken, SJld the excel- " lent evening's amusement they had had given. The Maoris leave this morning for Rotorua.
