THE WINTER SHOW.

j RECORD ENTRIES. The secretary of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, assisted by a large staff, has had a very busy time during the past few days receiving and tabulating entries | for the Winter Show, which opens, in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday next, and continues until Saturday , evening. Nearly two thousand entries have been received for all classes. The general classes have- filled, remarkably well, accounting for over 1200 entries. In the poultry section about 600 birds have been entered by the best known breeders from all parts of the North Island. The district courts have agairt drawn two competitors, and as each is certain of winning and going to no end of trouble I to ensure success, each of the displays will provide a show of its own. Both of these exhibits will be in the main hall this year. The contestants are Bell Block and Omata-Oafcura. There will also be a Maori exhibit, which, it.will'be remembered, was last year one of the features of the show. This exhibit also 'will be staged in the main hall. The entries, for the fancy work exhibits are I far beyond anything yet received by ' the Society, and in themselves will prove 4 an irresistible attraction to the members of the fair sex. •

The general collection for one farm has this year drawn four competitors, as against one last year, so thaij last year's winner will have to look to his laurels. Splendid entries have also been received in the root crops, and as it is reported that this year these crops are far superior to. previous years, the exhibit should be an object lesson to the farming com-. munity, as showing what cultivation and fertilisation will do.The swede competition for E. Griffiths and Co.'s £lO 10b gold watch has drawn tweiity-two competitors, as against eight last year. These competitors hail from as far as Stratford and Toko in the south, Urenui in the east, and Okato in the west, clearly showing that farmers recognise the value of the Society's efforts in encouraging intense cultivation.

The applications for space have been so numerous that the Space Committee are at their wits' ends to provide suffi- ' cient accommodation. Steps, however, are being taken to overcome this difficulty, and patrons can rest assured that their exhibits will be done full justice to.' Several milking machines, including the latest releasers, will be shown, as wclPiis many other working exhibits. A special feature of the Show:will be J the honey exhibits. Several competitors I have signified their intentipn of showing j the latest American hives with these industrious little toilers at work.

Numerous applications for space have been received from proprietors of side shows, including Wild West shows, headless ladies, performing parrots, champion wrestlers, and all classes of entertainment, which provide for the amusement and edification of the general public. • ' The dog trials* which are an innovation in connection with the Winter Show, and which -will take place at Frankleigh Park, have drawn competitors from all parts of Taranaki, and will undoubtedly be much appreciated by lovers of tho intelligent sheep dog. Everything promises that this show will be the mpst successful held under the auspices of the Society, and it only remains for fine weather to prevail to enable the public to attend in large numbers and BII9W their appreciation of the magnificent exhibition that will be submitted to them.
