RAILWAYMAN AT VARIANCE,

The local branch of the Engine-drivers', Firemen and Cleaners' Association passed' 1 a resolution that this branch, after fully reviewing the controversy between the Locomotive Record and the Railway Review, is of opinion that the .A.S.R.S. is hostile towards the E.F.C.A., and the Amalgamated Society by its garbled correspondence concerning locomotive men shows its own weakness by trying to cause" discontent in the locomotive ranks, and that this branch of the E.F.C.A. has every confidence in the Grand Council, which has gained more concessions and higher wages for locomotive men as a whole in three years than were gained in 20 years of the regime of amalgamation.' A CLAIM FOR RA^TES.
Auckland, Monday.
Mr. Justice Edwards dismissed. a claim by the Remuera Road Board for two years' rates on the. Sacred Heart College and grounds, stating that it was couducted by a religious order exclusively for teaching, and without any personal interest in the property.
A NAUTICAL ENQLIRY. Auckland, Monday.
A nautical enquiry is proceeding concerning the mishap to one of the boilers on the Northern Company's steamer Whakatere on the voyage from Thames to Auckland with 127 passengers,/ which has necessitated the steamer being laid up for six or seven months, whilst a new boiler is obtained from England, at a cost of about £2OOO.
NATIVE LAND PURCHASED.
Wellington, Monday.
Mr. Herries informed a Post representative to-day that he had completed the purchase of 3000 acres of native land between Napier and Wairoa, near the line of route of the Napier-Gisborne raitway. WAGES OF MINERS. Reefton, Monday. The Consolidated Goldfields Company having presented proposals for a new a meeting of the Miners' Union yesterday decided to hold a ballot in connection therewith, and to go under the Conciliation and Aribtration Act. There was some opposition to the proposal to refer the dispute to the Conciliation Board. The ballot will be taken to-morrow. CONCILIATION COUNCIL. Wellington, Monday. Mr. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, adjudicator in the Hawke's Bay trawling dispute, lias filed his decision with the Clerk of Awards to-day. The men's demands for an increase of wages and a reduction of hours wore refused, and the existing agreement is to be renewed uutil September, 1914. LICENSING SESSIONS. Wellington, Monday. At the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day all t!ie licenses except one (on the ground that it was not kept up to the required standard) were granted. In the case of the Duke of Edinburgh ami Wellington Hotels, the police reported that the premises were frequented and used by bookmakers. These reports, however, were not put in as objections. The Bench renewed the licenses, after issuing warnings to all licensees that they were expected to see that no betting took place on their premises.
