. New York, June 1. The Judge directed the jury to return a verdict for nominal damages because, although Mr. Roosevelt was fully entitled to exemplary damages, he pleaded in defendant's favor, that lie was willing to forego damages if his character was vindicated.
The Judge held that Xewett thought he was doing a public service in calling attention to the supposed failing of a public man. °
