ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
A PLEASIXG PERFORMANCE. The members of the Sew Plymouth Orchestral Society should feel highly gratified with the compliment paictathuit last evening, when they performed' to a crowded house, which gave them a ver" sympathetic hearing. The key-note of the performance was the variety of the programme submitted and the hnppy choice of the Society in rendering numbers which to the majority were "old friends." The orchestra was weakened by the absence of Dr. Suttie (Prat violin), Messrs, H. Scrivener (second Violin). S. Cottier (clarionet) and C, C. Ward (first horn). Commencing with the overture, "Bridal Rose," ,the orchestra -rendered "Evening Star," from "Tannhauscr" (Wagner), and "Humoreske' (Dvorak). The latter number was .-iw of the most enthusiastically received items on the programme. "The Lost Chord," a cornet solo, with full orchestral accompaniment, was finely given by Mr. J. Richards, and he had to repeat the item before the audience was satisfied. The excellent work of the string quartette was a feature of the evening, and a charming minuet was followed by the delightfnl "Hearts and Hearts." Another popular number was the "Intermezzo Russe" (Frank), the programme concluding with Von Sirppe's "Poet and . Peasant." During the evening, Mr. N. D. Day, a young singer, gave "Dream of Paradise." with violin and 'cello obligato, and as an encore number "A Per: ' feet Dnv." The accompanirtjents werin , played by the Society's capahTe conductor, Mr. Arthur V. Carbines, upon a Bechstein piano from the warehouse of Mr. L. E. Hoffmann.
