BOXING.

AN EVENT SHARPLY TERMINATED. , BY THE REFEREE. Napier, Tuesday. The Hawke's Bay Boxing Association had an unfortunate termination to the boxing contest arranged between J. Hegarty and A. Bromwich at the Princess Theatre, Hastings, last evening, in the presence of a very large crowd. The match was for a purse of £SO and expenses. At the commencement of the fourth round the referee (Mr. Sampson, of Wellington) declared the contest "no fight," and disqualified Bromwich. The referee did this in consequence of Bromwich's seconds having thrown in the towel at a time when, in the referee's opinion, the Sydney man was in a fit condition to continue. Up to this stage Hegarty had done all the leading, and his work was so effective that, at the end of the second round, and, again, at the end of the third, only the gong saved Bromwich from a knock-out. The Timaru lad showed himself the master from the commencement. Time and again he landed lefts with full force on the Sydneyite, and occasionally followed this up by punishing rights to the body. He seemed much too strong and too quick for Bromwich, who never got a chance to attack. He was badly "rattled" in thei, second round, and, in the third, spent most of his efforts in ducking and clinching.

As the gong sounded to commence the fourth round one of Bromwich's seconds flung the towel into the ring. The referee then went up to Bromwich, who appeared to be desirous of continuing, and, immediately afterwards, stated that his decision was "no fight," and that ftromwich was disqualified, as he wa,i quite fit to continue. This unexpected termination caused great dissatisfaction to those present. Subsequently Mr. Sampson stated to a press representative that, holding the view he did, it was necessary to protect the public bv declaring the affair void, He stated that, when appealed to by him, Bromwich was unwilling to go on. Bromwich, on the othet hand, alleges that he was willing to go on, and blames his seconds for throwing him over.

Barlett and Ireland, the principals in Friday's boxing match, have reached Wanganui, and are both reported to be in good nick for their fifteen rounds engagement.
