STRIKE BATTLE.
STONES, CLUBS AND BULLETS. New York, May 0. A strike of hod-carriers at Syracuse to-day led to a riot, and later there was a fight with the police. Seven Italian laborers were shot, one of them fatally. Six police were injured. Later in the day a pitched ;ba ttle between the strike and police took place near the courthouse. The laborers used clubs and stones, and the police replied with bullets. The strikers, 400 strong, had marched to a building in course of construction and called on the men employed there to knoik off work. Then 50 police came up and tried to drive the strikers away, but they resisted. The firemen were called out, and a firehose was played on the crowd, but it only made the men wilder. Then the, battle started with the police, and continued until the militia were called out. After the fight two policemen 'had to be taken to the hospital. The losses of the strikers a' " ''Mown.
