A bronze tablet in memory of Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, the great Australian explorer, was unveiled recently at Mount Arapiles, in Victoria. In 1831 Sir Thomas Mitchell made an attempt to reach the interior of Australia, but the murder of two of his party by aborigines ended the venture. After some smaller exploring trips, Sir Thomas in 1836 led an expedition from Sydney into what is now the State of Victoria. He traced the Lachlan river to its junction with the Murray and covered altogether some 2400 miles. Mount Arapiles, when found by Sir Thomas, was named after a town in which he had fought during the Peninsular War. The expedition was a difficult and hazardous one, and the commemoration of the deeds of the explorer is part of a scheme by the National Parks Association of Australia to keep alive the interest of the school children and their elders in the exploits of the early explorers and navigators.
