DISTRICT NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondents), LINCOLN ROAD. One of the most enjoyable socials held at Waitui took place on Friday night last. A beautiful moonlight night brought a large crowd together, and the result was a huge social success. The prominent members of the committee were Messrs M. Mcßae, E. Cooper and R. Hunter, who deserve to be complimented on their efficient arrangements. Songs were rendered by Miss Jennings, Mr. 0, Boldt, and another gentleman whose name I did not catch. In the matter of music Waitui is more favored than most other country districts, as nearly every other person was able to officiate for this occasion. The principal players were the Misses Sattler. Mr. C. Sehriber made a good M.C., and kept things going well into the early hours. Socially, Waitui has been dormant for some time post, but this social should be the forerunner of many more.
' LEPPEETON. The grand annual ball, "the" great social event of the year in Lepperton, took place on Thursday, 15th inst. From early morning an energetic band of ladies and gentlemen were hard at work with the decoration of the ballroom and supper table, and the beautiful appearance of both did credit to their artistic taste. Messrs Robinson, Crowe, Wills and N. Sampson made most efficient M.C.'s, and, thanks to their efforts, the dancers were well looked after. Mrs. George's orchestra gave first-class music. The supper was of the description for which Lepperton is famea, sucking pig, turkey, etc., being among the "trifles" provided for the delectation of ball patrons. The additions to the supper room were favorably commented on both by visitors and the ladies of the committee who found the additional conveniences a boon.
I understand that our local factory manager, Mr. W. Roberts, again tops the list for the highest average grade for butter at Moturoa during the past season. This is the third occasion Mr.
Roberts has headed the list. Well done, "Willie"! The suppliers mu3t also be congratulated, for, of course, the manager must have a good article to handle from the beginning. The dressed weight of the sheep at the guessing competition in connection with the Lepperton-Rentry Hill picnic was 1701b. Not too' bad!
Carpenters are at work on the local school and residence.
Rev. Griffin, T hear, proposes to hold a series of magic lantern and cinematograph entertainments during the "winter months.
EGMONT village. A dance held here last Tuesday night in aid of the Hall funds was poorly attended. Unfortunately there were several other attractions the same niglit, and so accounted for the small attendance. The committee should not lose confidence. Mr. and Mrs .R. Marsh supplied the music, whilst Mr. Wm. Batten was M.C. I hear there is to be a euchre party and dance shortly. .
The local er'ibimge players, who style themselves the "Invincibles" and "Dread-, noughts" rcsnectivelv. tried conclusions last week. The result proved that the last named were superior, winning by six games. The scores, were, 27. to gi. The losers had to provide'refresiiments. Last winter these teams played three matches, the "Invincibles" securing two out of three, so you may depend the "Dreadnoughts" are jubilant over their victory. At Mrs. Mcßeth's dancing class last Wednesday there was a fair attendance of beginners, the majority of whom for the short time they have been learning show promise of becoming firstclass.
Some wit who has evidently observed some of the young fellows prepared for the dance, has drawn an amusing and expressive sketch, drawing attention to the fact that the village saddler is nrepared to manufacture collars, homes, kicking straps, etc.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Marsh, who have been on a visit to Auckland and Te Arolia, returned home last week. The cold weather which h«s been experienced during tho last fortnight has considerably decreased the milk supply. The local creamery is now only working every other day.
Mr. Arthur Morton has purchased a motor car.
