The 1 floods in the 'Hunter River district are receding, though several days must elapse before the lower "parts of West Maitland are cleared. Oakhampton suffered the full force of the.flood and the restoration of roads, fences and embankments will involve a big expenditure, in addition to the losses of owners to the property through washawn ys and damage to crops. A public meeting will be held at Maitland to deal with the sad plight of many townspeople and others in poor circumstances who have suffered from the floods. Railway communication from Newcastle to Maitland has been restored.
