MINISTERIAL.
MR. HERDMAN IN TOWN. The Hon. A. L. lierdmau, Minister for Justice, arrived by the mail train last night. Mr. Herdman is on a tour of inspection of the prisons of the colonies, and came straight to New Plymouth after inspecting the gaol at Mount Eden. To-day he will inspect the New Plymouth prison. Interviewed hv a "News' reporter regarding the siiitements made to the Foresty Commission by Mr. .Jordan, Un-der-Secretary of Justice/that some prisoners did not like the tree-planting camps and had asked to be taken back to gaol, Mr. Herdman said that he had no knowledge of any such application having been made. He had not yet had time to make inquiry into the subject. He had, also no knowledge of any intention to discontinue the Hanmer Camp, and had not checked the figures quoted regarding the cost per camp of pi an tins 1000 trees,
Mr. Herdman will return to Wellington by the mail train to-morrow, after concluding his local inspection.
