; A DISTRESSING AFFAIR. 1 A distressing shooting accident oc--1 curred at Matupu on Sunday, as the result of which Miss Lucy Ann Dick, daughter of the late Mr. Simon Dick, formerly a well-known settler of Otakeho, received injuries which later in the evening terminated fatally (says the Hawera Star). The deceased was preparing dinner, when her younger brother Simon was cleaning a gun which had a weak lock. Simon having fixed this lock and cleaned the gun, went into a bedroom adjoining to place cartridges in the breeeh,. and on re-entering the kitchen his sister said to him that dinner would ho read}' soon, thinking he was going c::t shooting. Simon replied: "I am going to try these two cartridges.' and dosing the brcecli, the gun went off. The charge entered the girl's arm and side. Dr. MacDairmid was at once telephoned for, and. on arriving, seeing that the case was serious, sought the assistance of Dr. Sloan (Hawera) and Dr. Mil roy (Manaia). After a consultation it was decided that it would be necessary to amputate the arm. Miss Dick, whose condition was very low, never rallied, and she died a few minutes after eight o'clock thp.t evening.
