A Shanghai newspaper reports that the local gentry and farmers at Shenchowting, in Western Hunan, resenting troops uprooting the poppy crop, assembled in a temple to discuss the matter, whereupon the troops set fire to the and 07 were incinerated. A CHINAMAN FINED. Napier, Monday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Joe Gun was fined £2O for harboring opium. Defended elected to go to gaof for two months, as he could not pay the fine.
