THE RAILWAY STRIKE.
HEAVY FINES. SEVERE JUDICIAL WARNING. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 19, 9.15 p.m. Sydney, May 19. At the Industrial Court fifty more men concerned in the recent railway strike at Darling Harbor wese fined £lO and £ 1 Is costs each, leviable on their wages. Judge Heydon read them a severe lesson and declared that the defence was a series of transparent and dishonest sophistries. They were like spoilt children; All they could see was that they were not getting their own way in everything, and they looked upon the community as to be kicked and outraged at their will, and be further despoiled and insulted at the earliest opportunity. It was an evil sign of the times that this attitude should appear to be not merely towards private employers but to the State. They returned at the crack of the whip, for fear of losing their positions. It was fright and not fidelity that brought them back. Referring to preference to unionists, he said: "Let the Labor leaders beware lest they set the country thinking." Preference should rather be to those who stood loyally to the State above the dictation of any private body. No punishment the Court could inflict was comparable with that Tvhich the community in its good nature and patience had abstained from inflicting.
