A TRESPASSING HUSBAND. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wangaimi, Friday. Tn the Magistrate's Court this morn- ) ing a young man was sentenced to three months' imprisonment for trespassiiig on his wife's premises. The circumstances are peculiar, for the parties are separated . The husband went to Australia, from where he sent threatening letters to his wife. He has recently returned, and prowled about the house where his wife is living. He was arrested on :i charge of trespassing. THE FREIGHT OX FLAX, j ' Wellington, Friday. ( A deputation of Manawatu flaxmilI lers waited on the Prime Minister and 1 suggested that the Government should fix maximum freights on subsidised ] lines. They stated that in a year the j freight on flax to London had increased : from 45s to 85s per ton. Mr. Massey replied that the Government would not / subsidise any lines trading to England. .' He hoped it would never be necessary for j the Government to come to the assistI ance of exporters, but, if the time came (that they needed protection against exj tortionate charges the Government ) would not shirk its duty. The present j high freights were due to the increased 1 cost of ships and the shortage of vessels jto cope with the world's increased j trade. I THE DEFENCE OF PRISONERS. ' Wellington, Friday. j The Gazette contains regulations j made by the Government-in-Council, I under the amendment of the Justices of the Peace Act of last session, whereby the expenses of defending prisoners 1 without means will be borne by the I Crown. A MISSING LAUNCH. ' Auckland, Friday. The fishing launch Kathleen, which left for the fishing grounds in the Gulf on May 2, having on hoard Mr. Joseph Angelo, the owner, and a man named Inkster, has not since been heard of, and fears are entertained for her safety. ASSAULTING A CHINAMAN. Wellington, Friday. Vincent Furniss and Joseph Patrick McNamara were found guilty in the Supreme Court of assaulting a Chinaman. McNamara was placed on probation for twelve months, with very strinf gent conditions. Furniss, who had been I previously convicted of assault, was ordered to be sent to the tree-planting camp for nine months. SLY-GROG SELLING, j Wellington, Friday. James McDonald was fined £SO or in default 14 days' imprisonment for sly grog-selling on Sunday.
