A New Zealand Herald reporter lias been, given some interesting particulars concerning the inner or domestic working of H.M.S. New Zealand. For in ; stance, lie says that a very convenient arrangement is made on behalf of the men. Anyone on the ship can, if he wishes ''allot" some part of his pay to a dependent or other person, and the Admiralty pays the sum regularly to the "allottee," while the man receives the balance on board. A great deal of trouble is thus saved to the men, and there is never any domestic trouble about some 'missing remittance that "went astray in the post." The men are fed according to a scale which is worked out very accurately. The regulation "ration" costs sixpence per day, and each man has a ration allowance of fourpenee extra, which is• usually taken out in* small home comforts. The individual allowances of food are made up with great care. Then the wages are paid monthly,' and each quarter the ship's'ledger is closed aiul sent to the Admiralty, and a, new one opened. Last quarter's book showed a total payment of over £II,OOO. The rations may be considered to cost about £2OOO a quarter more,, so that the annual cost of maintaining the men of tlio New Zealand is well over £50,000 a year. BARKED YOUR SHINS?
