MISS McLEAN to be matron.
Miss Agnes McLean, a sister of Dr. McLean, of Wellington, has been appointed by the Public Service Commissioner to the position of matron in tlio Department of Immigration. The position carries a salary of £IBO per annum, rising to £2OO.
The work of the matron will be to meet immigrant girls arriving at the various Dominion ports, and extend any necessary advice and assistance to them. For those girls who desire it, thhe matron will find employment as domestic servants, through the Department of Immigration. In addition to this the matron will keep some record of the doings of the immigrants, after their arrival,' so that it may be known whether they are fulfilling the conditions under wl.ich the Government agreed to assist them. In the past, some girls have o »me out, ostensibly as domestic servants, but actually to engage in other occupations, and hitherto no systematic record has been kept. The Minister in charge of Immigration recently announced that the Government intended to provide hotel accommodation for immigrant girls,'at- porta of arrival, by arrangement with certain philanthropic societies, but under the direct control of the Government.
