DISTRICT NEWS.
TAKIKI. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of parshioners of St. Philip's Church, was held on the Bth inst., when there was a large attendance. The 'Rev. C. Houchen, home missioner, presided, and in the course of .a short speecli expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present. Mr. W. Rudkin, hon. secretin - ' *•••>-=nver. read the statement of accounts, which showed a balance in hand of £1 lis Id. Mr. Houchen apologised for the absence of Mr. A. A. Ward, who was unable to be" present owing to unavoidable circumstances. Mr. Ward wished him to convey to .the meeting his thanks to those who had assisted him in 1 church matters during'the ; past year. Mr. Houchen explained that the parish being now under the Home Mission it would not be necessary to elect a church committee, and that Mr. W T . Ward had been appointed hon. secretary and treasurer. The rev. gentleman referred to the good services rendered by Messrs A. A. Ward and W. Rudkin, Mrs. D. Jones (organist), and the Misses Laurence and Knowles (Sunday School teachers). The following, was.the programme of the concert:—Song, Miss Airey; song, Mrs. Rudkin (encored); song, Mr. Houchen (encored); song, Miss Airey; duet, Mr. and Mrs. Cutler; song, Mrs. Rudkin; song, Mr. Cutler; dialogue, Messrs Ward and Mather. A dance concluded a very enjoyable evening, tlu> music being provided by Mr. Burgess, who was called on at the last moment, and insisted on giving his services gratis. Mr. A. Chapman acted as M.C. The members of the Defence Rifle Club are now putting in some good practice, and have, several matches pending in the near future. The rough, boisterous weather we have been haying lately lias not been appreciated by the dairymen, though owing to feed being still plentiful its effect on the milk yield has'uot been so detrimental as might have been expected. Local sportsmen repoit that though birds are scarce, hares are as plentiful as ever, and it is a pity that a great number of these, which are considered a delicacy by many people in the towns, are for the most part thrown away or given to the dogs in the countrv districts.
